Découvert en 1795, l’Araucaria est originaire du sommet des Andes de l’Argentine et du Chili.....
Cet arbre très original, à la silhouette conique, avec un petit air « exotique » ....
Réputé pour sa croissance extrêmement lente, cet arbre, dit-on, peut vivre 1000 ans...
Dans nos régions, sa hauteur peut atteindre les 30mètres, avec une envergure de 4m, et des branches qui sont parfaitement étalées à partir de la base du tronc. Leur longueur s’amenuise ensuite pour donner à l’arbre son allure conique.
Classé dans la famille des conifères, il a une écorce ridée évoquant une peau d’éléphant. Il possède un feuillage persistant vert foncé brillant dont les feuilles imbriquées les unes dans les autres sont très coupantes....
Désespoir des singes ...
Ses feuilles imbriquées, acérés et piquantes rendant impossible toute ascension de l’Araucaria lui ont valu son surnom de « Désespoir des singes ».
Ses graines sont comestibles. Grillées, elles se consomment au dessert....
